Hanover
County is located in the east-central Piedmont and Coastal Plain areas of
Virginia, between the Chickahominy and
Pamunkey
Rivers. It is approximately 90 miles south of
Washington,
D.C. and 12 miles north of
Richmond. It is a part of the greater
Richmond metropolitan area. The County land area is 471 square miles and is bordered by the Counties of Caroline, King William, New Kent, Henrico, Goochland, Spotsylvania and Louisa. There is one incorporated town in the County, which is the Town of
Ashland.
Hanover's contemporary life is that of a vibrant rural and suburban locality. It has two interstate highways, I-95 and I-295, which are among the busiest in the eastern United States. The County has a population of approximately 97,500. This includes those residing in the Town of
Ashland, an authentic railroad town. Trains still rumble through the center of town, past
Randolph-Macon
College, lovely Victorian homes, and various shops.
Randolph-Macon
College is the oldest
Methodist
College in the United States.
Hanover is an excellent environment in which to live, for it offers a taste of rural America (it is the home of the internationally renowned Hanover Tomato) in the greater
Richmond area.
Hanover
County also is great horse country and boasts some of the finest livestock farms in central
Virginia. The County, one of the fastest growing in the state, continues to be an exciting community where history is preserved for the future.
